Important Information
The Nest is a relatively new JYSS program that provides long term accommodation to disadvantaged and at risk young women who are pregnant or have young children.
The Nest is the only service of its kind in Perth that provides young women and their children with individual, safe and secure accommodation while assisting them to address the significant personal and social issues in their lives.
Young women in The Nest come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have often experienced abuse, victimisation and poverty. While they stay in The Nest young women are required to complete the Balga Teen Parenting Program and are encouraged to complete secondary education and find appropriate employment.
The Nest is a long term program with a strong focus on developing sustainable life skills, which young women can be involved in for up to 18 months.
The Nest is the only service in Perth that provides young mothers with individual accommodation and long-term support. Other services provide accommodation to young mothers, but it is shared accommodation that is often cramped and not appropriate for raising young children.
The 2 young women currently in The Nest have expressed how fantastic the opportunity has been for them, with both on their way to completing secondary studies with a strong motivation to seek out further education and/or employment. Most importantly they are provided with the support they need to develop their parenting and life skills so that they can effectively care for themselves and their child once they move onto other accommodation.
