Mentoring
Important Information
The JYSS Mentoring program is a complimentary, voluntary program for clients who are already accessing the agency's services.
The program is of most benefit to young people who are disengaged from services, family and their local community. Mentoring consists of ongoing one to one, professional and developmental relationships, which involves a mentor providing informal support to their mentee. The mentoring is heavily focused on:
-
The needs of the mentee
-
Providing a caring and supportive environment
-
Encouraging mentees to reach their fullest potential
-
Developing a mentees vision for the future and working towards attaining it
In 2008 The Mentoring program linked 43 young people with trained mentors in order to provide a positive role-model and access to healthy community activities and services.
In this time 174 activities were conducted aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour and encouraging positive behaviours. Evaluations of Mentoring have indicated that we have successfully reduced the anti-social behaviour and provided informal counselling and support to 100% of clients.
Accessing This Service
Mentoring is available to any young person currently accessing a service within JYSS.
Mentoring is currently supported by the Attorney Generals Department and is based on a service framework that is strongly supported by government, corporate business and community organisations as an effective means of working with at risk young people.
